Strategic Partnership for Senior Executives

A sustained intellectual and practical partnership for leaders accountable for complex outcomes over long timeframes.

This offering evolved from years of working with senior executives. Most of them started working with me during a period of change (Architecting the Future). However, then they wanted to continue the work. Organisations are living ecosystems. They’re continuously evolving and my clients wanted a space where they could explore the strategic and systemic questions within the framework of their own leadership strengths and weaknesses. This strategic partnership evolved from that need: it blends strategic advisory insight and analysis with a coach’s focus on creating long-term personal capabilities.

You lead at the intersection of complexity and consequence. A digital transformation reshaping a bank. A provincial health system serving millions. A regional business competing against a global company. A private equity portfolio navigating exits and succession. A law firm working through leadership transition across several territories. A founder scaling beyond the structures that got the company here.

The work

The decisions you make travel through organisations, communities and sometimes entire sectors. What is scarce at that altitude is not information or advice. It is someone who will hold the whole picture with you — the strategic substance, the organisational reality, and the personal foundations that determine whether any of it gets executed — and stay alongside you long enough to see whether it worked.

This is not coaching in the conventional sense. This partnership gets inside the business alongside you. It draws on my extensive learning (see more under My Method) not to present answers but to provoke fresh thinking.

“An executive could very well think that given the complexity of his/her role, it would be very hard for someone external to provide valuable input on how to improve his/her performance and wellbeing. Karl completely broke that perception from the first coaching session. His ability to understand the context, the role, and the person behind it is remarkable.”

Vice President, Nordex Capital

“I cannot thank you enough for the immense strategic value you have added to my business, leadership, and personal life. Everything from your leadership coaching, care, concern, and your weekly Sunday morning insights—you continue to touch the entrepreneur’s mind, heart, and soul.”

In this work we integrate three domains

  • Strategic architecture and execution

Direct engagement with the substance — strategy documents, organisational structures, competitive dynamics, governance, board papers, the talent pipeline. Grounded in disciplined frameworks (Rumelt, Collins, Lafley and Martin) but focused on the messy particulars of implementation. Every conversation connects to action.

  • Leadership effectiveness

The capabilities the role demands: holding complexity without becoming overwhelmed, creating the conditions for others to perform, moving from personal excellence to systemic impact. Drawing on Amy Edmondson, Marcus Buckingham, Rita McGrath and Ronald Heifetz — and as readily on Sandel, Soyinka, Morrison or Appiah, because fiction and philosophy are as powerful when working with moral and human complexity.

  • Personal foundations

Energy, imagination, relationships, renewal — not as wellness additions but as strategic necessities. Across seven years of written records, the personal domain is consistently the earliest visible signal of strategic trouble, months before it reaches a number. Depletion precedes poor decisions. The pattern with a chairman is frequently the pattern with a parent. Stephen Grosz, Sue Johnson, Jerry Colonna and Thomas Moore are as present in this work as the strategists.

“He has become an essential component of my ways of working as it relates to Quarterly Planning, Strategy, Networking, the setting of goals, priorities and the like. If you had to ask me what truly differentiates him, I would say that it is his intuition and his ability to see things between the lines that you may not necessarily be able to see. He is extremely well read on all things strategy… In a world where there are a lot of buzzwords and more of the same, I truly find Karl to be different, swimming upstream and helping me become a better critical thinker”.

How it works

Initially we meet fortnightly. In this phase our work is archaeological — we uncover the precise conditions under which you are most and least effective, where your organisation has been most and least successful. This work grounds us in reality. It avoids the arbitrary imposition of a framework, instead allowing for an authentic crafting of solutions that fit you and your business’ unique needs.

We regularly adjust the work to meet your needs. You might want an anonymous 360 review, and I’ll interview stakeholders that you identify. You might ask me to review a Board presentation so that I can stress-test your thinking process. Frequently, I will have a three-way conversation — you and another stakeholder — to explore a common challenge, or to get another perspective on your leadership.

After the initial phase, most clients meet monthly. Long-standing clients sometimes move to quarterly, using sessions to prepare for board meetings or consolidate strategic thinking. During periods of real intensity, we meet more often — sometimes several times in a fortnight.

Between sessions I write. These are not summaries. They synthesise the conversation, name the patterns I am seeing, connect your situation to relevant research and precedent, and set out what to watch for before we next speak. Over time they become a substantial resource: a record of your thinking, your decisions and your development as a leader. Several clients have worked with me continuously since 2020. In these partnerships, the letters in turn become a research tool for next decisions — they allow you to see your patterns at various stages and to interrogate your strategy and leadership in a way that few other tools do.

The work is intellectually demanding. Expect to be challenged, to have assumptions questioned. It is also practical. The test is always: what will you actually do, and will it make a difference?

Who this is for

Founder-chief executives navigating growth, transition or transformation. Divisional executives in large institutions accountable for complex functions or portfolios. Managing partners in professional services firms working through strategic inflection points. Senior public sector leaders reshaping institutions. Subject-matter experts whose influence is systemic.

The common thread is significant responsibility, real complexity, and a commitment to the patient work of building organisations of substance.

If you are looking for a quick fix or a generic framework, this is not it. If you want a partner who will engage seriously with both the strategic substance of your challenges and the personal dimensions of your leadership, and stay alongside you for years — let’s talk.
